Maintaining good oral hygiene is essential for your overall health and well-being. While regular visits to the dentist are crucial, there are many things you can do at home to keep your teeth healthy and looking great. This article will provide tips on at-home dental care, including whitening teeth, preventing tartar build-up, and more.

Daily Oral Hygiene Practices

  1. Brush Your Teeth Properly
    • Frequency: Brush at least twice a day, ideally after meals.
    • Technique: Use a fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush. Brush for at least two minutes, covering all surfaces of your teeth. Hold your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to your gums and use gentle, circular motions.
  2. Floss Daily
    • Flossing removes food particles and plaque from between your teeth and under the gumline, areas your toothbrush can’t reach. Use about 18 inches of floss, winding most of it around your fingers and gently sliding it between each tooth. Curve the floss around each tooth and move it up and down.
  3. Use Mouthwash
    • Mouthwash can help reduce plaque, prevent cavities, and freshen breath. Look for an antibacterial mouthwash with fluoride. Swish the mouthwash in your mouth for about 30 seconds after brushing and flossing.

Home Remedies for Teeth Whitening

  1. Baking Soda and Hydrogen Peroxide
    • Mixture: Combine a small amount of baking soda with hydrogen peroxide to form a paste.
    • Application: Brush your teeth with this mixture a few times a week. Baking soda is mildly abrasive and can help remove surface stains, while hydrogen peroxide is a bleaching agent.
  2. Oil Pulling
    • Method: Swish a tablespoon of coconut oil in your mouth for about 15-20 minutes before spitting it out. This traditional method is said to reduce bacteria and whiten teeth naturally.
  3. Over-the-Counter Whitening Kits
    • There are various whitening kits available that can help you achieve a brighter smile at home. These kits typically include whitening strips, gels, or trays. Follow the instructions carefully to avoid damaging your enamel.

Preventing and Removing Tartar

  1. Preventing Tartar Build-Up
    • Regular Brushing and Flossing: Consistent oral hygiene is the best way to prevent tartar.
    • Diet: Reduce your intake of sugary and starchy foods, as these can contribute to plaque formation. Drink plenty of water to wash away food particles.
  2. Removing Tartar at Home
    • Dental Scalers: You can purchase dental scaler kits to remove tartar build-up. However, this should be done with caution to avoid damaging your gums and enamel. It’s best to leave tartar removal to professionals.

Additional Tips for Healthy Teeth

  1. Healthy Diet
    • Consume a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and dairy products. Foods high in calcium, such as milk and cheese, can help strengthen your teeth. Avoid excessive snacking and sugary drinks.
  2. Stay Hydrated
    • Drinking water helps wash away food particles and bacteria. It also stimulates saliva production, which naturally cleanses your mouth and neutralizes acids.
  3. Avoid Tobacco Products
    • Smoking and chewing tobacco can stain your teeth, cause gum disease, and increase the risk of oral cancer.
  4. Chew Sugar-Free Gum
    • Chewing sugar-free gum after meals can help stimulate saliva production, which aids in cleaning your teeth and neutralizing acids.

Professional Dental Care

While home care is crucial, it cannot replace professional dental care. Regular check-ups and cleanings are necessary to:

  • Remove tartar that has hardened on your teeth
  • Detect and treat cavities early
  • Identify any other oral health issues

Whitening and Tartar Removal: Professional vs. At-Home

Teeth Whitening

  • At-Home: Over-the-counter whitening products can be effective for surface stains but may take longer to see results.
  • Professional: Dentists offer more potent whitening treatments that provide faster and more noticeable results.

Tartar Removal

  • At-Home: Some tools can help, but they are not as effective as professional cleanings.
  • Professional: Dentists use specialized instruments to safely and thoroughly remove tartar.

Conclusion

Taking care of your teeth at home is essential for maintaining good oral health. By following proper brushing and flossing techniques, using effective whitening methods, and adopting healthy lifestyle habits, you can keep your teeth looking their best. However, regular dental visits are crucial for comprehensive care and addressing issues that home care cannot handle. Combining good home practices with professional dental care will ensure your smile stays healthy and bright.

How Does Teeth Whitening Work? https://lifestylearchitects.club/how-does-teeth-whitening-work/ Sat, 06 Feb 2021 19:13:28 +0000 https://lifestylearchitects.club/?p=1510

Have you ever considered whitening your teeth at home using commercial products?

Let’s talk about the options your may have.

Why do your teeth become discolored?

There can be a number of reasons for that. There are usually divided into extrinsic and intrinsic.

Extrinsic

These are the outside factors, for example the food you eat and the beverages you drink may affect the color of your enamel. It is usually recommened to go easy on red wine, coffee, tea and food with dyes.

Moreover, smoking contributes to staining as well.

Such discoloration may be treated with special whitening toothpastes.

Intrinsic

These are the inside factors such as infection, childhood illness, trauma, aging or medication. Such stains may require professional bleaching procedures at your dentist’s.

Teeth Whitening

There three scenarios for your teeth here:

  • You can buy a commercial product and apply it by yourself
  • Your dentist may dispense a particular product to use at home
  • A more serious method administered by  your dentist in his/her office

Let’s talk about at-home-options sold over the counter.

Whitening toothpaste

Whitening toothpastes change the surface color of your teeth with different substances, for example abrasives or the chemical blue covarine. It takes some time for whitening toothpastes to work.  Blue covarine toothpastes may be effective after just one brush.

Whitening strip

Whitening strips contain hydrogen peroxide, but less than professional products. You apply these strips one or two times a day for a set period.

Whitening pen

A new format for an old kind of product. Essentially very similar to whitening strips, these are pens containing carbamide peroxide. It is convenient to take this pen anywhere you go and apply it whenever you have too much red wine 🙂

Home-based methods

In our previous post we discussed some home remedies such as soda and eating more raw fruit and veggies. Such methods do take much longer time for you to see the result, but anyways consider changing your diet, improving your hygiene and taking supplements to better your overall dental health.

Smile! Can you?

Or does it look a bit colorful?

There some natural and safe things you can do at home to make your teeth look better.

Why not trying? They are all easy to do. Some of them you can start right now.

Baking Soda

Try brushing your teeth with baking soda: 2 teaspoons of water and 1 teaspoon of baking soda.

It creates an alkaline environment (preventing bacteria from growing) and can scrub away surface stains on your teeth. Over some significant time you may notice an effect. By the way toothpastes containing baking soda has a whitening effect.

Hydrogen Peroxide

For many years hydrogen perioxide has been used to desinfect wounds as it is able to kill bacteria. Toothpastes containing 1% hydrogen and peroxide baking soda leads to significantly whiter teeth. There are some questions regarding the safety of this product though.

The best way to use this products is as a mouthwash. You need to use a 1.5% solution to avoid negative effects.

You can easily dilute the most common commercial concentration to 1.5% by mixing equal parts of water and perioxide.

Vegetables and Fruits

A diet high in fiber is good for your body and teeth as crunchy fruits and vegetables can rub plaque away while you are busy chewing.

The best whitening fruits are strawberries and pineapples. Some people make a mixture of strawberries and soda. However, there is no evidence this mixture can whiten your teeth.

Brushing and Flossing

Anyway, brushing your teeth twice a day is a must. Do it right before going to bed and in the morning. If you have a chance, try to brush your teeth everytime after a meal.

Flossing after each meal helps too. Moreover, visiting a dentist for a regular check-up and cleaning is essential. Cleaning prevents a build-up of yellow plaque.

EXTRA TIP:

Take care of your vitamins intake. It is proved that taking a multi-vitamin helps to improve your dental health in general and make your smile brighter. Calcium and Vitamin D are essential for stronger bones and whiter enamel!

Commercial Products

There are some easy-to-use commercial products, for example whitening pen, toothpaste and spray from White One:
